Mustangs are defeated by a late Sabercat surge

MCALLEN, TEXAS - The highly anticipated clash between the No. 3-ranked Edinburg Vela SaberCats and the McAllen Memorial Mustangs lived up to its billing, culminating in a thrilling 31-27 victory for the SaberCats in a pulsating RGVSports.com Game of the Week at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. The SaberCats, now 4-0, kick off District 15-5A DI competition with a win, while the resilient Mustangs (2-2) find themselves 0-1 in league play.

Facing a 27-17 deficit with only 10 minutes on the clock, Edinburg Vela orchestrated a dramatic comeback. A pivotal moment came when tight end Noah Rocha capitalized on a fumble recovery, charging into the end zone to narrow the score. Subsequently, athlete Bernabe Gonzalez, a key player in the SaberCats' offensive arsenal, sealed the victory with a game-winning 29-yard run. Gonzalez's decision to eschew a potentially additional touchdown, opting to secure the win, demonstrated both strategy and sportsmanship.

Despite the Mustangs' previous 63-0 defeat to Vela, they showcased remarkable improvement, with sophomore quarterback Kane Coy displaying prowess by contributing two first-half touchdowns, including a 73-yard bomb to Dylan Goodson and a 31-yard scramble. The back-and-forth battle saw Coy connecting with Goodson again for a 27-yard touchdown in the second half. While Memorial's efforts were commendable, Vela's defense ultimately held firm, securing a hard-fought victory. The SaberCats now set their sights on a marquee matchup against No. 1 PSJA North, while the Mustangs prepare for a faceoff with La Joya Palmview.
