Lobos Edge Mustangs 20-17 in Close Contest, Potentially Altering Playoff Landscape

MCALLEN, TX — The La Joya Palmview Lobos secured a 20-17 victory over the McAllen Memorial Mustangs on Thursday night, concluding the regular season. A disciplined defensive showing and a late field goal proved decisive for Palmview, who overcame an early deficit to win at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs gained early momentum, establishing a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback Zarek Garcia connected with key playmakers, and wide receiver Michael Alanis broke through on a 53-yard end-around run, marking his 14th touchdown of the season. Running back Jayden Soliz also provided consistent gains, following the blocking of a strong Memorial offensive line. Missing from the lineup, however, was starting quarterback Kane Coy, who is currently sidelined with an injury. McAllen Memorial is hopeful that Coy will return for next week’s playoffs, where his presence would add stability to their passing game.

Despite McAllen Memorial’s early control, Palmview adjusted defensively and narrowed the score. In the second quarter, running back Christian Martinez scored on a six-yard carry, reducing the Mustangs’ lead to 14-7. Martinez, along with running back Aiden Ramirez, moved the ball effectively, benefiting from steady offensive line play.

In the second half, Palmview’s defense capitalized on a costly turnover by the Mustangs. A high snap on a fourth-down play led to a fumble, which defensive back Odel Flores recovered and returned 34 yards for a touchdown, giving Palmview a 17-14 lead. The Mustangs responded with a 38-yard field goal by kicker Bryan Sanchez, tying the game at 17.

Palmview’s final drive positioned them for a field goal attempt. With three seconds left, Palmview’s kicker converted a 23-yard field goal to secure the win. This marks an important victory for Palmview, ending the regular season at 7-3 and enhancing their position in the District 16-5A playoff standings.

Notable performances included Alanis and Cisse for McAllen Memorial, while Flores and Ramirez contributed critical plays for Palmview. The Mustangs, now also 7-3, face potential changes in playoff seeding, while Palmview strengthens its postseason outlook in a competitive district.

As both teams advance to the postseason, McAllen Memorial will focus on maintaining their offensive consistency and preparing for a potential return of Coy, while Palmview looks to build on their defensive performance.
