Smithson Valley Overpowers Edinburg Vela to Advance in Playoffs
EDINBURG — Smithson Valley overpowered Edinburg Vela with a 55-13 victory on Friday night at Richard R. Flores Stadium, ending the SaberCats' undefeated season in the second round of the Class 5A Division I playoffs.
Edinburg Vela began the game competitively. Early in the second quarter, senior quarterback Geoffrey LeFevre connected with wide receiver Juan Garza for a 23-yard touchdown, narrowing Smithson Valley's lead to 10-7. The momentum shifted soon after.
Turnovers significantly impacted the SaberCats' efforts. LeFevre threw three interceptions in the first half, each leading to scoring opportunities for the Rangers. By halftime, Smithson Valley had built a commanding 41-7 lead.
Smithson Valley's quarterback, Cade Spradling, was instrumental in the win, accounting for five touchdowns. He threw a touchdown pass, rushed for three scores—including a 53-yard run—and returned an interception for a touchdown. Running back Bradley Sowersby contributed two rushing touchdowns, including a 73-yard run.
Despite the deficit, Edinburg Vela continued to compete. In the second half, LeFevre and Garza connected again for a 63-yard touchdown pass. The SaberCats' defense worked to contain the Rangers but faced challenges due to the turnovers and effective offensive plays by Smithson Valley.
Edinburg Vela concluded the season with an 11-1 record and secured the District 16-5A Division I championship under first-year head coach Ernie Alonzo.
Smithson Valley (10-2) advances to face New Braunfels in the regional semifinals at the Alamodome. The Rangers previously defeated New Braunfels during the regular season and will prepare to meet them again in the playoffs.
