McAllen High defeats Edinburg High
EDINBURG, TEXAS - In an impressive non-district opener, the McAllen High Bulldogs staged a remarkable comeback, scoring 21 unanswered second-half points to defeat the Edinburg High Bobcats 39-23 at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg. Quarterback Joaquin Valdez and running back Jayden Herrera emerged as pivotal playmakers, collectively contributing to six total touchdowns in the victory. Valdez showcased his dual-threat capabilities, going 11-of-20 for 174 yards and two passing touchdowns while adding two scores on the ground. Herrera's impact was equally significant, amassing 161 yards on 20 carries and making two receptions for 33 yards, including a touchdown.
The game was tightly contested through the first three quarters, with the Bobcats gaining momentum on a 78-yard touchdown run by Ryen Abrego. However, the Bulldogs responded swiftly, with Valdez scoring his second touchdown from 2 yards out. The McHi defense played a crucial role, forcing a fumble that set up Valdez for a 26-yard touchdown pass to Diego De Saavedra, extending the Bulldogs' lead. Jayden Herrera sealed the victory with a 6-yard touchdown run, securing a two-possession advantage. McAllen High head coach Patrick Shelby commended his team's resilience and emphasized the importance of halftime adjustments and football IQ.
Despite a commendable effort from Edinburg High's quarterback JT Santa Maria and receiver Jude Vega, who connected for a 38-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and set up a late second-quarter touchdown, their offensive momentum faltered in the final period. McAllen High's defense played a key role in containing the dynamic duo. Looking ahead, the Bulldogs (1-0) return home for a two-game homestand, facing off against the Mission High Eagles, while the Bobcats (0-1) shift their focus to an intracity clash against Edinburg Vela at Richard R. Flores Stadium.
